Born and raised in Ohio, Helen Ebersole earned her teaching certificate and a degree in English at Juniata College, in Huntingdon, PA. After living in various locations in Ohio, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, Helen and her husband, Dr. Glen, settled in Lakewood, NY with their children, David, Mark, Kathleen, and Daniel, in 1963.
Among her various volunteer activities; Helen became Lakewood’s Village Historian in 1993. She was a key player in the Lakewood Memorial Library’s Capital Campaign, which raised $8000,000. Her knowledge of local Lakewood and Jamestown, NY history has led her to writing and lecture career. Immersed in community involvement has lead her to leadership roles in the Fenton Historical Society, Southwestern Central School Board, Jamestown Community Concert Board, Chautauqua County Arts Council, Creche, Chautauqua County Planning Board, the United Way of Southern Chautauqua, and Lakewood Memorial Library Board of Trustees. Her book on Robert H. Jackson “Off The Pedestal” is fascinating look at Justice Jackson, Chief Prosecutor at the principal trial against leaders of the Third Reich, and his life when he lived in Jamestown and Lakewood. Her continuing contributions have left a legacy to current and future historians and writers. In addition to publishing newspaper and magazine articles, her books on local subjects are well known. Books include: Trolleys of Jamestown and Chautauqua Lake, Electricity and Politics in Jamestown 1891-1931, Chautauqua Lake Hotels and the very recently published An ImPRESSive Record: Jamestown Journal-1826 to 1941. |
